US ARMY PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Mmmmmm.. WHY PUBLIC AFFAIRS?  Public Affairs personnel provide a public information service detailing or highlinghting newsworthy reports to the general public......... so in order to keep the general public informed of developments within 'their' military, and so thus justifying military expenditure and overtly aggressive foreign policy.  All modern military campaigns require constant funding through government channels.  Public support for a war is essentuial if it is to succeed.  Public don't want to see body bags and have a high expectation that war is quick, and results in a positve outcome for their country. The feel good factor at home is important, as well as the major morale function that the PA Corps provides within the Armed Forces.

In democratic arsenals PA directs information campaigns to the public on military issues, whilst PSYOPS directs information camapigns at the enemy. In non-democratic arsenals Military PR + PSYOPS functions are blurred - they tend to be one and the same thing. This is an over exageration to some extents, as many democratic nations try to mange to the role of PA and PSYOP in unique ways'' - using terminology like operational communication, information support and corporate communication.

To many a visitor one may question why one associates the clean art of Public Affairs with PSYOPS.  What one needs to understand is that PSYOPS is also a clean art - it is just directed at the enemy. Propagated messages are tainted by the negative association with Propaganda and the Nazi Proapagnda Machine of WWII.  Modern PSYOPS Forces use truth as their communication vehicle.  Deception and Propaganda are seperate entities.

Interestingly enough many senior Generals within the US Armed Forces are calling for US Army PA to come under direct control of PSYOPS. An interesting view.
