US ARMY PSYOPS VIETNAM WAR BEERCANS

The Vietnam War saw the introduction of ' in-country' made unit insignia - unnofficial by nature and using low grade materials.

The US Army insignia tradition of cloth insignia and Distinctive Unit Insignia DUI's made it appealing and relatively easy for many

GI's to have their own unit insignia made by locals. The DI's made where referred too as beercans, as the manufacture of these

items was poor. The flimsy nature of the DI's resembled the flimsy nature of beercan tin - which was fashioned by many a soldier

into an item of esprit de corps.

Many a design, logo or badge made initally as an unnofficial device was adopted, modified and later accepted by the

US Military Heraldic department and introduced offically as a DUI.
