1 PSYCHOLOGICAL OPERATIONS UNIT: Raised in 1977

Established as part of the Corps of Infantry on 1 July 1977 and Headquartered at Old Cranborne Barracks

Salisbury (Harare).

The main emphasis of 1POU was operations against the terrorist - structured towards psychological

confusion of the enemy - the objective of so undermining his morale that he becomes unwilling to fight and is

encouraged to defect from the forces of communism.

This is aptly symbolised in the unit's badge, motto and colours. AC has heard from a former member that Dress

Green Uniform was not a normal issue for such personnel - camouflage and stable belt being worn as barrack dress etc.

However, this chappie got married in 1 POU Dress Green Uniform. The SGM indicating that beret badges be worn

as collar badges, 1 POU beret etc.  The beret is medium blue.

Post 2000, interest in Rhodesiana grew - possibly from the fact that the market had slowed internationally!   Circa 2007 / 2008, the militaria markets where 'alive' once more with newly designed Rhodesian commerative items.  Because these items where primarily designed and produced in South frica, the insignia mirrored the traditional South African Army styled shoulder flash i.e. metal and enamel.

The insignia shown below is of this commerative style and was initally sold as such. Unfortunately, as the items made their way around the world criss-crossing dealers tables, the items have been incorrectly sold as genuine Rhodesian era items. They are not!   THEY ARE PURELY COMMEMORATIVE!
